BIG registration for dentists in the Netherlands
BIG (Beroepen in de Individuele Gezondheidszorg) is the Dutch professional register. You must be in the BIG to legally practise as a dentist (tandarts) in the Netherlands. Here is exactly what the process looks like for EU dentists.
Step by step
How it works
Gather your documents
Diploma, official translations, transcript, passport, recent CV, and proof of professional integrity (good standing) from your home country.
Pass Dutch at B2
An accredited NT2 Programme II or equivalent certificate is required. Plan 6–9 months for most learners with a clinical-language focus.
Submit to CIBG
Apply online via the BIG register, upload documents, and pay the registration fee (~€105 at time of writing).
Wait for approval
Processing usually takes 8–12 weeks for EU diplomas. Non-EU candidates may need additional assessments (AKV-test, professional aptitude exam).
