Netherlands
Work as a dentist in the Netherlands
The Netherlands is one of Europe's most attractive countries for dentists: high demand, modern clinics, strong patient relationships, and competitive pay. This guide walks you through everything from registration to your first day at the chair.
Step by step
How it works
Check your qualification
EU-qualified dentists benefit from automatic recognition under EU Directive 2005/36/EC. Non-EU diplomas go through a formal recognition process via Nuffic and CIBG.
Reach Dutch B2+
Dutch language at B2 level is required for BIG registration and is essential for clinical practice. Most dentists need 6–9 months of intensive study.
Register in the BIG
Submit your diploma, language certificate, and ID to CIBG. Pay the registration fee. Approval typically takes 8–12 weeks.
Match with a clinic & relocate
We introduce you to vetted Dutch clinics, help with contract negotiation, and support BSN registration, housing, and your move.
Why it's worth it
What you can expect
Strong, stable demand
Dentist shortages across the country mean qualified candidates have real choice in where they work.
Modern clinics
Digital workflows, CBCT, intraoral scanners, and structured hygiene support are standard in most practices.
Competitive salary
Employed dentists typically earn €70–110k; self-employed (ZZP) dentists often €120–200k+ depending on hours and specialty.
Work-life balance
Predictable hours, a 32–36h work week is common, and strong patient continuity.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- Can EU dentists work in the Netherlands without re-studying?
- Yes. Under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, dental diplomas from EU/EEA member states are automatically recognised. You still need BIG registration and Dutch B2+.
- Do I need to speak Dutch to work as a dentist?
- Yes. The BIG register requires Dutch at B2 level (CEFR), and you cannot practise clinically with patients without it.
- How long does it take to start working?
- From first contact to first patient is typically 4–9 months, depending mainly on Dutch language progress and BIG processing time.
- Are non-EU dentists welcome?
- Yes, but the process is longer: diploma recognition through Nuffic, an aptitude test, and a work-permit/IND route. We support both EU and non-EU candidates.
